Tips and Ideas

Work Frome HomeWe’ve all thought about working from home. Of course working from home has it’s benefits but, as with all other things, there are also cons to working from home. We will discuss the cons later in another post. Here are the reasons why you should work from home and how these benefits can not only prove beneficial to you but your family, the environment, your lifestyle, your health and your wallet.

  1. You can go to work in your pajamas. Working from home means that no one is going to see you except your family. What does this mean for you? You don’t have to spend extra time getting ready every morning. You can actually work in PJ’s and none of your business associates will know it.
  2. No commuting to work, well unless you count the seconds it takes to get to your office. Working a normal 9-5 can sometimes mean an hour of driving one way just to get to and from work. Working from home saves time and money that you would normally spend on gas. This even promotes a healthy environment.
  3. Working from home increases productivity because there are no chatty co-workers to deal with. Co-workers are great, you will probably miss the socialization, but co-workers have a tendency to decrease work productivity.
  4. You’ll never have to worry about forgetting your lunch at home. How many times have you gone to work, only to realize that you left your turkey sandwich on the counter at home. I hate when this happens! Working from home means you will have your entire fridge only a few yards away. This means the end of paying $1.25 to get a soda or $0.60 for a small snack.
  5. Breaks can be used to do whatever you want. I mean anything! Watch your favorite TV show, vacuum the floor, do a load of laundry, do a lap in the pool, take a shower, run to the store to get groceries, feed the dog, etc.
  6. Child care can be done while you work (in most cases). This is a big one for work at home mommies and daddies. Child care can be very expensive but if you work from home you can usually keep your little one close by without disrupting your work. This will create a more positive environment for your family and you will develop a healthy relationship with your children.
  7. You can live or travel anywhere you want. Even other countries as long as you still have all of the tools needed to perform your work. Usually these are a phone, a computer with an Internet connection and possibly a fax and those are pretty easy to get a hold of, even overseas or at a hotel.
  8. Working from home means more tax deductions for you. You can deduct some or all of your mortgage/rent, office supplies, computer equipment, telephone bill and materials. Not everything is deductible and there are limits but a good percentage can usually be claimed.

  1. Add a signature line to your e-mail that includes a very brief description of your website and of course a link to your website. Your signature should appear on every e-mail that you send out no matter how big or small. This includes anything that you may forward! Just imagine how many people will receive your signature.
  2. If you don’t already, join and post in forums. Pick two forums, they can be related to your website or not. Of course finding a forum that has members that would be interested in your website would be more beneficial. Not only can you post about your website but you can also add a forum signature line that will show up on the bottom of every post you make. This is excellent exposure and many search engines will consider these valid links to your website so you will get higher page rank too.
  3. Website directories can be free but keep in mind that some aren’t. There are thousands of free website directories that want to list your website. Do a Google search for free website directories and I’m sure you will come up with quite a few results. Some of these directories will require a reciprocal link. This isn’t too hard just add their link to your links page and they will add you to their directory. Others will do it with no back link. Tip: Try finding a directory related directly to your area.
  4. Okay, so this one is not completely free, it requires that you have business cards with your website on them. Once you have business cards in hand, spread them around like fire. Seriously, leave one every where you go. And put one in the hands of every single person that you meet. Going to the doctor’s office? Leave some cards on the magazine table. Magazines, books, menus, shoe boxes, gift bags, etc. business cards are a great advertising tool.
  5. Comment on some of your favorite websites. Many websites these days have a commenting system. From CBS News to Myspace, they all have commenting systems that you can use to get free exposure for your website. Make your comments informative and intriguing and they will drive customers to your website.
  6. Write your website address on invoices and bills that you may receive when you send them back to the company. Either write the address or include a business card. This is your choice but a handwritten note will probably draw more attention, seem more informal and advertise better to the person receiving the mail.
  7. Use a mailing list to get your message out there. You will find that there are many mailing lists on the internet and off the internet. Many of these lists have subscribers that want o know about your website. Find some mailing lists that relate to your website and what it offers. Send an e-mail the publisher with some information from you website. Most mailing lists charge a fee to advertise. This isn’t an advertisement because many of these subscribers want the information that you possess. The publisher may offer an opportunity to write an article or may write an article about you if they think your website will benefit their subscribers. Your e-mail to the publisher could include information on your website and why you feel it will benefit their readers to know about your website.
  8. Who doesn’t like free stuff? Everyone loves getting something for free so why don’t you give free stuff away? What are you going to give a way for free that requires not one dime out of your pocket? Information of course! Creating and publishing an e-book is an excellent way to market your website. It may take a little time to compose an e-book that someone would find useful but just keep writing until you have perfected it.
  9. Ask everyone you know on the internet to post a link or an ad to your website on their websites. This will create a visibility for you. It doesn’t matter if their website is related or not. If you have a catchy ad, domain name, or text link then people will remember it. Make sure that anyone seeing your link or ad will know clearly what your website is about.
  10. Focus on mastering SEO. Okay, you might not master SEO but at least try to focus as much as you can on it. Search engine optimization is so important these days. Search engines can deliver a lot of traffic to your website and they will as long as you make it search engine friendly.
